What to Look for in a Functional Medicine Licensee Program (10 Questions to Ask)

By Sachin Patel  ·  May 2026  ·  Precision Wellness Practice

Short answer

Not all practitioner programs are equal, and the stakes of choosing poorly are high. The wrong program costs time, money, and the opportunity to build the practice you actually want. These 10 questions will tell you everything you need to know about any program you evaluate.

The wellness practitioner education market is crowded with programs ranging from $500 online courses to $30,000+ high-ticket masterminds. Most promise transformation and clinical confidence. Many deliver information. Very few provide infrastructure.

The framework below is designed to help you distinguish between programs that teach and programs that install, and to evaluate Precision Wellness Practice against the same standard we ask you to apply to every option you consider.

The 10 Questions to Ask Before Joining Any Program

1. Is the clinical methodology outcomes-tracked, not just evidence-informed?

Any program can claim to be “evidence-based.” The more important question is: do practitioners in this program track patient outcomes on a standardized dashboard? Can you see real before/after data from real patients? Precision Wellness provides every licensee with an outcomes tracking dashboard from day one.

2. What is done-for-you vs. what do you still have to build?

This is the single most important question. A program that teaches you how to build a CRM is fundamentally different from a program that gives you a pre-built CRM. Ask specifically: after I enroll, what’s already built and what do I still have to create? Get the answer in writing.

3. Is there a real practitioner community, or just a Facebook group?

Peer community is not a feature, it is a clinical tool and a retention mechanism. The question is whether the community is structured (weekly live calls, shared standards, in-person events) or passive (a forum that exists without facilitation). Precision Wellness includes weekly live practitioner calls and three in-person mastermind retreats per year.

4. What exactly does CRM and automation include?

Get specific: are automations pre-written or do you receive instruction on how to write them? Is the CRM pre-configured or do you configure it yourself? What email sequences are provided and in what format? Vague answers here signal that “CRM and automation” means a tutorial, not a system.

5. Can you see real patient transformation data?

Clinical credibility requires evidence, not testimonials. Ask to see actual outcomes data from practitioners currently in the program, blood sugar improvements, weight changes, energy scores, whatever the clinical claims are. Precision Wellness practitioners track this data systematically; it is the foundation of premium pricing and patient referrals.

6. What is the realistic time to first revenue?

A program that takes 6–12 months to generate your first client revenue is a different investment than one that has you running your first patient cohort in 30 days. Ask specifically: what is the average time between enrollment and first paying patient? For Precision Wellness, the answer is 30 days.

7. Is marketing done-for-you or taught as theory?

Marketing education and done-for-you marketing assets are very different things. “We teach you how to market” means you still have to write copy, design assets, and build campaigns. “We provide the marketing assets” means you have something to deploy immediately. Ask which one applies.

8. Are in-person events included, or are they extra?

Many programs advertise in-person retreats that are actually separate purchases at $1,500–$5,000+ per event. Ask explicitly: are in-person experiences included in the annual fee? For Precision Wellness, three mastermind retreats per year are included in the $10,000/year license.

9. How does renewal work, and what are the actual terms?

Understand the renewal model before you enroll. Is it automatic? What triggers it? What changes in year two? Is there a documented process for evaluating your progress before renewal? Precision Wellness uses a documented before/after review at months 10–11, so renewal is a data-driven decision, not a pressure sales call.

10. What implementation support is available after enrollment?

Ask specifically: when I’m stuck on implementation, who do I contact and how quickly do they respond? Is there live weekly access to support or only recorded content? Precision Wellness provides weekly live practitioner calls, bi-monthly workshops, and a network of peers delivering the same system.
